11 back bench Labour Senedd Members have written to the Prime Minister at Westminster, saying the UK Government is not only failing to deliver on promises to hand more powers to Wales but is “rolling back” on what is already devolved.
The letter is signed by Labour’s Mick Antoniw, Hannah Blythyn, Alun Davies, John Griffiths, Lesley Griffiths, Julie Morgan, Jenny Rathbone, Rhianon Passmore, Carolyn Thomas, Mike Hedges, and Lee Waters.
The letter is NOT about the CWS Bill, it’s about a very different issue. But the principles are surely the same.
The letter speaks of things being “imposed” on a “devolved matter”.
The letter says,
“For our own government to then come in and use the very same powers to act in devolved areas is at best deeply insensitive, at worst a constitutional outrage“.
“If this was being done by a Tory Government, we would be calling for a judicial review”.
“This must never happen again“
Senedd Members say they want devolution to be respected.
Senedd Members say they want existing devolved powers to be used by Wales not for Westminster to be doing it for us.
You may recall that Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, recently made very similar comments.
⭐️⭐️⭐️So would it not risk appearing hypocritical to then not use devolved powers on a devolved issue? ⭐️⭐️
Not great optics so close to an election.
Especially when even the Labour led LJC Committee and Lynne Nealge the Cabinet Secretary for Education have had to agree that secondary legislation on a Bill from Westminster is very “inadequate for proper scrutiny of legislation”
